Defining the Project & Setting goals~

I’m a Notion-obsessed list girly, so of course I need to start this dev log series with some framework. I can’t really give a baseline because technically I started loosely homebrewing this world a couple years ago, but I can at least give a starting line as of now. It’s time for some cutesy progress bars!!

My plan is to create two booklets. One will be for the DM to study the world, the map, get ideas for story starters, and more. The second one will be a reference for the players that’s designed like a handbook to help them with character creation and give them snippets about the world without spoiling any secrets for the DM to use.

My intention is for my booklets to provide a comprehensive world to play your games in: a magical realm, in-theme conflicts, countries, beliefs, NPCs, aesthetics, etc. DMs will be able to pair it all up with the rule system of their choice. Honestly, they could even take my ideas and alter them for their own campaigns — It’s all about sharing my ideas and allowing others to make it their own!

Inspirations & Research Topics

Any magical girl fan will be expecting some quintessential sources of inspiration: Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Madoka. But the more I looked at magical girl stories, the more I really wanted to go further with the genre. Especially in the way of diversity!

Which led me to thinking: What would other Earth cultures look like if they were bent and reflected in a magical girl-themed high fantasy realm? What would an African magical girl look like? What about a magical girl from Sri Lanka, or Norway?

And then those thoughts brought up more: How does my Coven and the rest of the realm feel about trans people, and are they allowed to be magical girls? What determines who gets to be a magical girl, and why is that so?

Sure, I could go the route of making it a homogenous fantasy aesthetic that’s unattached to our world.. but that’s not my vibe. If I want to include a wide range of people and cultures and do it justice, it will require some research!

Points of Research

Alright, it’s time to get to work on this femme-forward game project!! I’m particularly excited to rewatch some of the OG series. :)
